Introduction To Poem

Last May, a well-loved teacher recited the following poem to the student body. The editors thought it fitting that it should be put down in print.

AVE ATQUE VALE TO ARMA VIRUMQUE

No more with Caesar shall I bridge the Rhine,
or help old Bacchus drink his wine.

Sail with Ulysses the deep blue sea,
or dance the lawns with the Graces Three.

Alongside Hannibal scale the Alps,
or with a cake quell Cerberus' yelps.

Slide down the fire-escape from Troy,
with Aeneas and his little boy.

Ferry with Charon the river Styx,
or build old Nineveh with sun-dried bricks.

Hob-nob in Athens with master Plato,
or Feast on beans with austere Cato.

Stroll down with Horace to the forum,
or solve, à la Euclid, Pons Asinorum.

Set out with Jason aboard the Argo,
in search of Golden Fleece for cargo.

Scatter with Daphne Arcadian dewdrops,
or puncture the eye of the giant Cyclops.

In teaching myths and Grecian muses,
there never was need to make excuses.

Now, it is, farewell friends! For with my wife,
I shall be content with the simple life.
