During the first weeks of September, the feeling of the student body towards the
Jarvis Senior Football Team was one of great pessimism. Ater the memorable 1961 season
in which the red, blue and white went all the way to win the T.S.S.A.A. City
Championship, the fortunes of the Jarvis squad seemed to be steadily drifting downhill. Last
year the boys suited up for four league games, winning only one, and not making the
playoffs. There was not much interest generated by the 1963 pre-season exhibition
games, and for a while it was questionable as to whether Jarvis would even be
represented in the T.S.S.A.A. Senior League.
At the annual East-West Classic the Jarvis feelings seemed to be reflected in the
number of empty seats inthe Jarvis section. Whereas the year before, our team had the
honour of playing in the final game of the day, this year Jarvis played in the third game
of the first half, battling Lawrence Park to an unimpressive scoreless tie.
However, the boys seemed to realize and resent the feelings of fellow students
and set out to prove themselves - - which is exactly what they did in their first two
league games.
Down 6-0 at the half against Northern, they roared back in the second half to score
20 unanswered points on two touchdowns by Don McEwen (one a beautiful 25 yard run)
and a seven yard plunge by Harold Martin. Dave Toman added a convert and a single
to round out the scoring.
The following week the Jarvis squad started where they left off. The big red team
ran up a 33-7 score by the half against Lawrence Park. Six point majors went to Tim
Kong, on a 25 yard drive; Bob Morgan, running 65 yards after recovering a Lawrence
fumble; Hal Martin, Don McEwen, and Wally Glavis.
In the second half the Jarvis defence eased up, allowing twenty points while Hal
Martin scored his second touchdown with Dave Toman adding his fourth convert of the
day. Final score; Jarvis 40, L.P. 27.
Jarvis travelled to Danforth Tech the following week. A perennial doormat, Danforth
was rated as a league power this year and proved why in their 60 minutes against Jarvis.
Wally Glavis scored on an 8-yard pass from Don McEwen in the first quarter and Hal
Martin finished our scoring with a six yard run in the last quarter. However, Danforth
squeezed 14 points in between the Jarvis counters and won a 14-12 heartbreaker.
The biggest game of the year was played at Northern against North Toronto, the
power of the league. In the final regular season game, the Norsemen held a close 14-8
lead at the half. Tim Kong scored on a 20 yard run while Dave "Toe"man added a
convert and a single. In the third quarter Wally Glavis set up a Harold Martin score after a
60 yard pass and run play.
