VOLLEYBALL

This fall, when the weather forced us to move inside, the volleyball inter-form competitions for Upper School began. After many weeks, the team that emerged victorious was the deserving grade thirteen girls.
After the Christmas exams the lower school girls began their competitions. The winning team was the girls of 10D. The final competition between these two champion teams was played before the annual Girls' Athletic Night dance on January 22, in the large gym.
Many thanks to Miss Elton, Carole Roberts, my assistant, and all the referees, timers and scorers who came out faithfully to these inter-form games.

BASEBALL

In previous years, the upper school baseball tournament has been held in the fall, and the lower school tournament in the spring. This year, my assistant, Ann Porteous, and I hope to run both tournaments in the spring. Last year's tournaments were a great success, and 12A-B emerged as the school champions. Here's hoping this year will be equally successful.

ARCHERY

Archery is one of the more deadly sports practised by the girls at Jarvis. Congratulations to Carol Manning for getting the best aggregate score. Shooting at heart shaped targets, Jane Louie, Marilyn Thompson and Anne Onu were the top cupids. The destructive ones, Marilyn Thompson, Anne Onu and Carol Roberts broke the most balloons.
Thank you to all those who came out and tried to master the art of the bow and arrow. Congratulations to those who conquered the sport.

SWIMMING

Swimming had one of its most successful years this year. Enthusiasm from all grades resulted in a new and varied program. Up until Christmas special classes were held for non-swimmers. We would like to thank Jane and Judy Hague, Jane Campbell, Penny Tunnel, Gabrielle Stiller and Donna Scott for giving their time and talent as teachers.
A swim team was started this year with about ten girls coming out faithfully every Monday and Wednesday for training. I think that all the members will agree that though we may not be the fastest in the city we have made a good start and have had fun doing it.
Bronze classes started early in February with both instructors and students working hard for many months. Synchronized swimming classes began in late January with Miss Elton doing an excellent job of teaching. Interform swim meets were held during the last two terms. They were competitive and the turn out for them was good.
A special word of thanks to Donna Scott, the assistant curator, and to our staff advisers (Miss Lane and Miss Elton) who gave their time and help "above and beyond the call of duty".

BADMINTON

The Badminton season opened early in the new year and proved to be more successful than ever. A school team was chosen and together with the singles, doubles, inter-form and mixed competition, the girls demonstrated their ability to play this demanding sport.
I would like to thank my assistant Naomi Ono for her active participation and Miss Elton for her helpful co-operation.

BASKETBALL

Basketball owes a great deal of thanks to Miss Elton and Miss Lane. These teachers stayed after school at all hours to coach the junior and senior basketball teams. Both, I might mention, did very well in inter-school matches. Upper School inter-form was a great success with each form having a representative team. Grade 13 was the upper-school champions.
Lower school presented a marvelous turn-out with the exception of a couple of forms.
  Basketball was a success!
Again a big thanks to you Miss Elton and Miss Lane and especially to my assistant Andrenia Aitken, who was a hard worker and without whom basket would not have been. Thank you!

PING-PONG

This year the Ping-Pong activities were centred around practices held twice a week for the benefit of those who wished to learn to play and those who wished to improve their skills in ping-pong. The tournament, held shortly after Christmas, consisted of girls competing in both singles and doubles. When enough tables were free, there was mixed ping-pong with plenty of competition from the boys. On the whole quite a number of girls learned this popular game and were able to develop enough skill before the tournament began.
We would like to thank Miss Stinson who was a great help to us in the first term and who was able to acquire two new tables for us before leaving Jarvis. Also thanks to Miss Elton and Miss Lane for their assistance during various crisis occurring throughout the year. Special thanks also to our assistant Anna Maria Mattila, for her presence and help every Tuesday and Thursday nights; and last but not least to all those who participated in making this year's Ping-Pong a great success.
