Jarvis Nostalgia Discussion Group -
Image Sizes for Posting

We enourage members to limit the size of images they upload to the group.   This is especially important in the case of members who normally have their digital cameras set at 'high resolution'.

  • Not all members have a high speed Internet connection and oversize images can transfer very slowly,
  • Google does impose a limit on the amount of storage available to our group and oversize images quickly eat into that limit,
  • Having to 'scroll' photos while viewing them detracts from the enjoyment.

    As a general rule, images should not exceed 800 pixels in width and a maximum file size of about 100Kb.

    Images (and posted messages containing images) larger than about 100Kb will be cleared from the group site in the interests of conserving space for discussion postings.

    Determining Your Image File Size

    Windows users can view file sizes in the Size column in Windows Explorer ('My Computer').

    You should check file size during the process of uploading a file or attaching it to your posting.

    When the dialog box for 'Attach' or 'Browse' is presented (image, left), click the 'View Menu' icon at the top right of the dialog box and select Details.

    File sizes will be displayed in the Size column.   If the size exceeds 100Kb, you should reduce the image before posting.

    Reducing Your Image Size

    Most graphics applications can quickly reduce (rescale, resize) the image size.   Suitable software is normally supplied with most digital cameras.   (NOTE: You may wish to save the reduced file under a different name, keeping the original high resolution version for later printing.)

    The following instructions are applicable to all Windows users who are not familiar with graphics software or have no other graphics application installed on their system.

  • From the Start Menu, select Programs -> Accessories -> Paint
  • Click on the File menu and then click Open ...
  • Navigate to the file you wish to reduce and click the Open button

  • Click Image --> Stretch/Skew...

  • In Stretch, enter the percentage the image is to be reduced, using the same percentage for both Horizontal and Vertical fields.

  • Use Image --> Attributes to check the pixel width of your reduced image.

  • Click File --> Save As ...

  • Posting Image Sets

    If you wish to make a set of images available (i.e. more than one or two images) it may be more appropriate to use a free image hosting service such as flikr and then simply post a link to your photos on the discussion group.

    Not only does this reduce storage strain on the discussion group, but these sites make viewing of image sets much more pleasant with slide show facilities.
